Who benefits from unified communications? We asked Erwin Weber, a Detecon consultant and one of the authors of the management report "The End of Babylon."
Mr. Weber, why is the report called "The End of Babylon"?
Nowadays, company employees have a large number of different communication channels available to them. And still, they often can't be reached or there are communication breakdowns because users use different media. Unified communications, or UC, combines all communication channels such as telephony, faxing, instant messaging and video conferencing in one comprehensive user interface. This form of networking enables employees around the globe to exchange information via all of these communication channels.
The combination of individual communication systems has been possible for quite some time now. What's new about UC?
UC significantly exceeds the capabilities of existing solutions for efficient communication. For one, contact information also includes status information. This refers to the current location of the contact and their availability. This enables you to see at a glance what the best time is to get a hold of your contact or if they're currently busy. You can initiate a phone call through the application. Additionally, UC applications are always available regardless of the end-device or network used. Information access as well as employee availability can therefore be guaranteed at all times regardless of location or the medium employed.
